The team at a glance

Bruce raced his own cars from 1985 and, from 1987, ran a second and third car for guest drivers. The results database racingyears counts these starts in Jenner cars by the guest drivers:

Chris Kneifel14
Elliott Forbes-Robinson10
Gene Felton3
George Robinson2
John Schneider1
Paul Radisich1

Source: racingyears – Bruce Jenner Racing. Its own entry totals don't add up, so treat these as a guide. racingyears spells him "Paul Radisch"; Autoweek's Brainerd results (17 July 1988) list Paul Radisich 17th in a Porsche 944.

Bruce Jenner

Seventeen confirmed results so far. The two podiums came in the Porsche 944 in 1987 – 3rd at Long Beach and Portland – and the best in the 1982 Pontiac was 7th at Mosport in 1985.

The Olympic decathlon champion Bruce Jenner (now Caitlyn Jenner) also raced in Trans-Am – gotransam counts seven starts between 1983 and 1990. At Niagara Falls in 1988 both were entered: photographer Mark Windecker's captions list "15th Bruce Jenner (Olympian) Camaro" and "DNS Bruce Jenner (non-Olympian) Porsche 944" – our Bruce, in the #42.

Results databases sometimes merge the two, so on this site we only use results that match our Bruce's Pontiacs and Porsches.

The other Jenner Camaro

Bruce also commissioned the American team RocketSports to build a new Camaro Trans-Am – chassis RS17 – for New Zealand's TraNZam series. He brought Chris Kneifel back to drive it first, in late 1995. Steven "Junior" Johnson then raced it in Australia and in the 1996/97 TraNZam with ENZED backing, winning several races.

It's a different car from the 1985 Pontiac that became the Jenner Camaro on this site.

"The wild rumour of the week"

After Lagasse's clean sweep at Wigram, John Hawkins reported the rumour that the Pontiac "will remain in New Zealand after the Peter Jackson series. Even more exciting was the story that it would be staying in Christchurch." It did – and it's still racing in New Zealand today.

Before America: Bruce in OSCA

Bruce – "Jelly", a Dunedin man – started with a mid-engined "Zephyr Corvette" special around 1967, then raced the ex-Spinner Black, Rod Coppins Chevrolet Camaro as #41 and #17 at Ruapuna, Levin, Levels and Teretonga in the mid-1970s. It stayed in New Zealand when Bruce went to America; the OSCA series it raced in is the one his later Pontiac-turned-Camaro won with Paul Williams (2000) and Chris Hatton (2012).

Pace when it counted

1987 belonged to the Merkur XR4Ti – Forbes-Robinson's Brainerd win in the Jenner Porsche was the only race that season a Merkur didn't win. The Jenner Porsches also set fastest laps at Long Beach, Portland and Road America and took pole at Road Atlanta.

Unconfirmed leads

Can you help?

  • Another caption shows 1996 champion Andy McElrea at Ruapuna "in the mighty AC Delco Trans-Am Camaro". The same car, or a different AC Delco Camaro? Oversteer
  • The Camaro body carries "Brennan Automotive Specialists" on its front wing. A January 1993 preview tipped Grant Brennan's "immaculate Camaro" as a TraNZam front-runner – was he the Brennan who rebodied the Jenner car?

Help fill the gaps

Much of the record still lives in print: SCCA Trans-Am programmes and results sheets, On Track magazine, NZ Speedsport, and Murray McFadden's Wigram Motor Racing 1949–1994. If you have results, programmes or photos for any of these cars and drivers – especially Bruce's 1986 season, Gene Felton's and George Robinson's finishes, and Andy Greenslade's 1NZ title year – please get in touch.
